Van Gilmer: From Growing Up in a Segregated World, to Civil Rights Activism, to Musical Empowerment

Van Gilmer grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the height of Segregation. He was arrested many times for civil rights activism. His life offers a compelling story of the search for racial justice in America.


In celebration of Juneteenth—the day that commemorates the abolition of slavery in the American state of Texas and throughout the Confederacy—Van Gilmer gave a moving performance of the Freedom Trilogy.

Van Gilmer has inspired and led dynamic interracial choirs for decades. This video offers a taste of these efforts.
Van Gilmer directs an annual Choral Music Festival Choir bringing together musicians from diverse faiths and cultural backgrounds. The 2020 Festival was cancelled due to COVID-19, but the choir put together this virtual concert instead.
