The Ethereal Sound of Outer Space

How would you feel if suddenly, as you quietly admired a dark and starry sky, you heard the stars, galaxies, and black holes making all kinds of crazy noises? Find out in today's Cuppa Go post!

Listen to the Universe - Although space is a nearly perfect vacuum and, thus, cannot transmit sound, there are ways to get an idea of what space sounds like. Go behind the scenes with the team that creates amazingly beautiful and eerie “sonifications,” translations of data into sound, and learn how meaningful they are to people who are blind or low-vision.
Hear What an Actual Black Hole Sounds Like - NASA astronomers discovered that pressure waves sent out by the black hole caused ripples in the cluster’s hot gas that could be translated into notes. Take a listen to what they heard.
The Sounds of Mars - The Perseverance Mars rover carries two microphones, letting us directly record the sounds of Mars for the very first time. On Mars, the atmosphere is entirely different than on Earth. If you were standing on Mars, you’d hear a quieter, more muffled version of what you’d hear on Earth, and you’d wait slightly longer to hear it. But, the biggest change to audio would be to high-pitch sounds, higher than most voices. Some sounds that we’re used to on Earth, like whistles, bells or bird songs, would almost be inaudible on Mars. Hear what 'Mars Sound' is like!
