A Stunning Portrait of Tenochtitlan: Capital of the Aztec Empire

Make a virtual visit to the capital of an empire of more than 5 million people as it existed in 1518. Tenochtitlan is home to 200.000 people, and is one of the largest cities in the world. This incredible digital reconstruction is simply astonishing!

The year is 1518. Mexico-Tenochtitlan, once an unassuming settlement in the middle of Lake Texcoco, is now a bustling metropolis, and capital of the far-reaching Aztec Empire. Today, we call this city Ciudad de Mexico - Mexico City. What did this ancient city, raised from the lake bed by hand, look like? Using historical and archeological sources, and the expertise of many, Thomas Kole has tried to faithfully bring this iconic city to life. These two images only suggest the richness of this reconstruction. Explore the rest of this amazing project here.
